About The Drug Hoodia
Hoodia is the name of a natural appetite suppressant that is available in a variety of forms. It is also recognized by its full name, Hoodia Gordonii.
Hoodia is derived from a cactus-like plant, a succulent that grows naturally in South Africa's Kalahari dessert. The plant has since been grown in greenhouses and pharmaceutical labs all over the world for its use in appetite suppressing supplements and medications.
The Hoodia Gordonii plant has been used for centuries by the native Bushmen living in the Kalahari dessert. The natives of the Kalahari are a nomadic tribe who often went off on long hunting trips in search of food. While on these long trips, the Bushmen would eat the root of the Hoodia Gordonii plant to stave off pangs of hunger.
What Is Hoodia Used For?
Hoodia has been studied by pharmaceutical companies for its appetite-suppressing properties. Scientists have since identified a single molecule, called P57, that is responsible for the appetite suppressing capabilities of Hoodia. Phytopharm, a British pharmaceutical company, holds the license for P57, and continues to study the molecule for use in appetite suppressing drugs.
Hoodia is currently marketed in a variety of forms as a dietary supplement and herbal remedy for weight loss. It acts in a manner similar to glucose (a natural sugar), signally the brain to tell it it is full. This helps the user reduce food consumption, hence calorie consumption, to promote weight loss.
How Is Hoodia Taken?
Hoodia is eaten or ingested, depending on the form taken. Used as an appetite suppressant for weight loss, Hoodia should be taken as directed on the package label or as directed by a physician, dietician, or other certified professional.
Hoodia Precautions And Side Effects
As a natural weight loss remedy, Hoodia is not regulated as prescription drugs are; it is prudent to discuss Hoodia use with a physician, although there are no recognized side effects, food or drug interactions known to be caused by Hoodia use.
Hoodia allergy is not widely known or common, but as any substance does have the potential to cause an allergy in some people, users should be aware of allergy symptoms while using Hoodia and discuss them with a doctor if concerned.
Although Hoodia appears to be a fairly safe weight loss supplement, some medical conditions may be affected by Hoodia use, and so, as with all drugs and supplements, it is prudent to talk with a doctor before beginning a Hoodia regimen.
