Soma is the brand name of the medication known generically as Carisoprodol; it is also known by the name Vanadom (another brand name).
What Is Soma Used For?
Soma is a muscle relaxing drug; it is used to relieve pain and muscle tension caused by muscle injuries such as muscle sprains and strains.
Soma is almost always used in conjunction with a complete treatment protocol that includes rest and physical therapy.
Soma is sometimes used for purposes other than those included on its product labeling.
How Is Soma Taken?
Soma is an oral medication that comes in tablet form; it is usually prescribed three times daily. Soma may be taken with food or without.
Soma can be habit-forming, so it is very important that the drug only be taken by the person for whom it was prescribed, and exactly as directed by the doctor. Soma use must be supervised by a doctor for the entire course of treatment, including the time when that treatment is ended. Some patients experience withdrawal symptoms after using Soma, and so it is important that a patient not stop using Soma without the doctor's approval; the doctor will create a schedule for reduction of the medication which will allow the patient to come off the drug slowly and comfortably; this is especially important if the patient has taken Soma for an extended period of time.
Soma Precautions And Side Effects
It is important for patients to tell their doctor of other medication use (especially cold and allergy medicines, muscle relaxants, sedatives and sleeping pills, and even vitamins) to avoid overdosing and drug interaction. It is also imperative that the doctor be given a full medical history including all other medical conditions; pregnancy, liver, and kidney disease are of particular importance.
All drugs, including Soma, run the risk of causing allergy or side effects. Any symptoms of allergy, and the following side effects, should be discussed with the treating physician.
• Loss of feeling, sensation
• Paralysis
• Weakness
• Loss of coordination
• Light-headedness
• Fainting
• Seizures or convulsions
• Vision difficulty
• Confusion
• Agitation or irritability
• Sleepiness
• Difficulty sleeping
• Mood swings and depression
• Headache
• Nausea or vomiting
Dosing
Care in dosing of Soma is important to avoid dependency and/or side effects. Dosing should proceed as ordered, and if a dose of Soma is missed it should be taken when remembered. If it is close to the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped, and the schedule should resume as normal; under no circumstances should a double dose of Soma be taken.
