Tramadol
Tramadol can be used to treat several kinds of neuralgia, and is commonly used to treat moderate to severe pain.
Dosing Information
Take this medication exactly as it is prescribed to you. Increasing the dosage without consulting your doctor could result in serious side side effects. Similarly, do not cease taking Tramadol without consulting your doctor first. This drug is highly addictive, and a sudden cessation of it could cause serious withdrawal symptoms.
Warning: Those who have ever been addicted to alcohol or drugs should not take Tramadol.
Side Effects:
Patients taking Tramadol may experience several side effects of Tramadol. Among them are dizziness, agitation, headache, sleepiness, weakness, mood swings, heartburn, indigestion, vomiting, nausea and shaking.
If you experience any of the following more serious side effects, seek emergency medical care immediately:
• Seizures
• Rash or hives
• Difficulty breathing
• Facial swelling
• Swelling in hands, legs or feet
• Hallucinations
In the event of a suspected or actual overdose, call your local poison control center. If the patient is unconscious or not breathing, call 911 immediately.
Overdose symptoms can include excessive drowsiness, seizures, heart attack, difficulty breathing and contracted pupils.
Important Information:
Do not take tramadol if you have ever been addicted to drugs or alcohol.
Do not crush the tablet, and take it only by mouth. Inhaling powder from a crushed tablet or diluting it and injecting the mixture intravenously can cause life-threatening side effects or death.
Those who have a history of seizures may be at serious risk of seizures while taking tramadol.
What should my doctor know?
Tell your doctor if you:
• Have ever been addicted to alcohol or drugs
• Are taking another narcotic pain reliever
• Are taking sedatives or tranquilizers, anxiety medication, medication for a mental illness like bipolar disorder, or
• Street drugs
I’m pregnant. Can I take tramadol?
Tramadol is in FDA pregnancy category C. As such, it is unknown whether taking this medication during pregnancy will be harmful to an unborn baby. It may cause serious or fatal side effects if taken during pregnancy or labor. Additionally, tramadol passes into breast milk and can therefore affect a nursing baby.
