Ultram is the brand name of the medication known generically as Tramadol ; it is often referred to generically as 'Tramadol Tablets'.

What Is Ultram Used For?

Ultram is an analgesic, which means that it is a pain reliever. It works in similar fashion to Morphine and binds to opioid receptors in the brain. Opioid receptors in the brain are part of the pain sensation transmitting network of the brain and body. Blocking those receptors works to stop the transmission of the sensation of pain so that pain is not felt by the Ultram user.
Ultram is prescribed for patients in need of moderate and moderately severe pain relief. Under the right conditions, Ultram is a very effective pain reliever. Ultram does not fall into the classification of the NSAID drugs that so often need to be avoided due to medication interaction, ulceration, and internal bleeding. Ultram may be chosen to replace NSAID pain relievers.

How Is Ultram Taken?

Ultram is an oral medication that is taken in tablet form, swallowed whole. Ultram can be taken with food or without. It should only be taken as prescribed as Ultram can cause the user to build up a tolerance and/or a physical dependency to the drug.
Ultram can be difficult for patients to tolerate when it is first used. For this reason, dosing is often started low and increased to achieve an effective level. This improves the ability of the patient to tolerate Ultram.

Dosing

Ultram is normally given in 50-100 mg doses usually four times per day. Dosages may vary depending on where the patient is in the dosing schedule. The maximum dose of Ultram is 400 mg per day.
If a dose of Ultram is missed, it should be taken when remembered, but if it is near the time for the next dose the missed dose should be skipped; it is never safe to double-dose on Ultram; if an overdose is suspected the patient should seek medical attention immediately.
